Course Description 

Budgets, income statements, audits, bank reconciliations, IRS requirements, teller sheets, endowment funds, balance sheets, chart of accounts, designated funds, fiduciary responsibilities of lay and staff members, payment requests, deposit envelopes, arrgh! Are church finances driving you crazy? Increase your understanding of church finance matters.

Course Objectives

At the conclusion of the course you will be able to: 

  • Locate the source documents to create a set of financial practices and procedures.
  • Implement the necessary procedures for federal and state tax requirements.
  • Understand what balance sheets and income statements are and how they work together.
  • Develop expectations for the paid and lay financial leadership of the church.


Discussion Board Participation

Discussion board is where we will carry on dialogue about course materials and our reflections. You may post anytime, but be aware that the instructor will be logging on to the discussion board once each day Monday through Friday. If you post during the weekend it will likely be Monday before your post is read, which may delay progress for the next session.

Each participant is expected to make at least two posts per week, to include at least one response to postings by fellow participants and the instructor. Posts should be substantive contributions to the dialogue (NOTE: “I agree,” “Good comment,” etc. are not substantive posts). On the other hand be succinct as you write. You are not expected to produce a “term paper” with each one.

Please post early in the week so that all will have sufficient time to dialogue.
